Mr. Obama has announced that the White House will not be observing the National Day of Prayer. But then what do you expect from a devout Muslim in his faith. He is just again proving how hypocritical he is since he ran on the concept that he was supposed to be the modern day Abraham Lincoln. Wasn't it Abraham Lincoln who said, "A man stands tallest when on his knees". I am pretty sure he wasn't meaning that he was praying to allah. Oh, well. It just goes right along with the direction we are going as a country under his leadership. Say what you will about the previous administration, at least then we still acted as if we had some fear of God!

Of course, your answer is that he just inherited Bush's debt, and yes he did, but come on, in the first hundred days he has blown Bush's spending to pieces. This man would not do well with winning the lottery (wait, he already did by becoming our president without being born an American citizen) because he would blow it all in 100 days. This is all good, because I am now making my political predictions for the up-coming elections...we have less than 3 years of this George Soros puppet. We will not be seeing Obama for eight years! I broke out the golf clubs for the first time here a few days ago. Hopefully they will be used a lot more this year than last. In case anyone is wondering what the first picture is, it was a computer screen that was hooked up in the carts. They told you the exact distance to the front and back of the green as well as the distance to the pin. It was neat. Pretty classy, actually.

I recently watched a video clip on a friend of mine, Paul Peterson's, blog. It was of an atheist who was witnessed to by a Christian man and it was a good experience. While the man said he still believed there was no God, he made a statement that caused me to think. He asked this question, "How much do you have to hate someone to not proselytize (share your faith)?" He went on to ask, "If you know there is a Heaven and a Hell, how much do you have to hate someone to not tell them if they are not ready for eternal life?" It is a sobering thought. While today we here so much from "Christians" who say they don't share their faith openly on a regular basis because they don't want to offend anyone. Are we not being offensive by not alerting them to what lies ahead for them if they don't give their heart to Christ? Just a thought to consider as we face a new year. One of the areas that I am asking God to help me with during the 2009 year is evangelism and sharing my faith. As I think of this question, my heart is pricked!

Last evening a couple from our church, the Kohler's, took us to a living nativity. It was our first experience so we didn't know what to expect. It was great. The kids loved it too. They were hoping to show it to 800 people but ended up with 2000 and 200 on a waiting list.

This was back in the "old" boys dorm. Before the new and updated improved amenities were available. We made some great memories here and this is one of them. We were enacting a scene from WWF (now WWE) professional wrestling. Paul Peterson was some scrawny nut job who was facing NJ Santiago, in the Bills shirt. Aaron McCarty was refereeing. Jason Shelly was simply there to provide a nose for Aaron to pick. It was a great match and Paul took home the belt.

We always have a great time during our annual hayride. Neal and Carrie Zimmerman do a great job of hosting the event. We always see some deer and other wildlife throughout. The food is always delicious. It seems to be tradition to have BBQ'd chicken that has been cooked over an open flame all day. It is top-notch stuff. All said, a good time was had by all.

He was asked some straight forward questions. Due to the fact that the Democrats did not like the straight questions, they have cancelled a interview that was scheduled with Mrs. Biden. We had a great first experience at Outer Banks. The weather was beautiful. The oceanfront was empty and the house was huge. We spent all week doing nothing. This was a true vacation. We didn't have a list of places to see, we just was flat out lazy. We played alot of games such as King's Court, Rook, Phase 10, and Skipbo. We grilled out, ate sea food and drank an abundance of Pepsi. Looking forward to next years trip already.

Starting tomorrow morning our family vacation officially begins. We are going to this cozy shack in Outer Banks, NC for a week. It has 8 bedrooms, 4 of which are king master bedrooms. 6 1/2 bathrooms, 2 kitchens a private pool, etc. We are 600 feet from the ocean and the crow's nest is supplied with one of the two hot tubs. Please pray for us that we will be able to enjoy such lousy accommodations. I am not as high-tech as my fellow bloggers (aka edgewise.com and the winding tale) so I will not post pics from the road. But then again, you are used to me going weeks without posting. See you next week.

Yesterday as I was leaving our house to go to the church, I passed several police cars on our road about 1/2 a mile from our house. I saw the helicopter flying low and slow and thought maybe someone escaped form the Federal Prison or Detox facility, both of which are right near us. I am not sure what is happening. Either the Democrats have a highly intelligent plan (which is highly doubtful) or they are really wanting the Republican Party to keep the White House. Sen. Biden and VP hopeful has recently been recorded saying that Hillary Clinton was capable of leading the country and probably was a better choice for VP than he was. Then he recently disagreed openly with Sen Obama on the AIG bailout. Then he scolded his party and an Obama endorsed ad that attacked McCain about his inability to use e-mail as inappropriate. There seems to be some serious problems on the Democratic side. Word has it that Biden will drop out of the running on or near Oct. 5 citing health reason and Hillary will take his place. In a recent talk, Bill Clinton said he now understood why so many like Sarah Palin..."people can relate to her", he said. They feel she is real and one of them. All of this suggests that the Democratic Party is seriously fearing defeat come Nov. 2. Oh well, thanks Biden, Clinton and Obama for the good campaign help

On September 14, our church celebrated our 60th Anniversary. It was also our 2o year celebration for our Bus & Outreach Ministry. Rev. Barry Arnold from the Lebanon God's Missionary Church was our guest speaker. We took time to honor some special people. Rev.
James Plank, the one who started the bus ministry. Ed Schultz, aka. Uncle Ed, who for years shouldered the ministry and now Marvin Beachel. Marvin does an outstanding job and is seeing more consistent and higher numbers due to his burden for the ministry. Then there is Kieth Forney, Peter Brinkmann, Willard Vinson and many others who do many different thigs to help make things go smoothly. Thanks Ladies and Gents for all your work. We are anticipating greater things this coming year.

While we were away for my grandpa's funeral, we spent Sunday in Galax, Virginia, home of our first pastorate. Galax is only a short distance from Beckley, WV, so we took advantage of the opportunity to see everyone again. The Galax Haven of Rest Bible Church is filled with some great people and it was nice to spend the day with them. Pastor Ledford was gracious to us as we worshiped with them. Their Associate Pastor, Chad Winter, did a great job in preaching, challenging us to not lose the annointing. We had lunch with The Keys. Shirley, Sheila, Greg & Pam, Sabrina & James and all the kids, thanks for the lunch and accomodations. It was nice to see you all again!

funeral with my dad.

This past Friday, we received word that my grandfather had finally lost the battle with Parkinson's Disease. It had been a long hard battle, but today he has been granted eternal
relief from the pain and suffering he knew for so long. My grandpa was a spiritual hero to me. The thing that sticks out to me the most, was that he was a man of prayer. Aside from my immediate family's prayers, my grandpa's prayers helped me get my life back in order and answer the call to preach that I had been running from. Talking with him for just a moment, there was no doubt he was a deeply spiritual man. I will cherish many memories of grandpa, but I will greatly miss his prayers. I have found that the consistent prayers of people are a great help in our walk through life, and I just lost a friend who faithfully prayed for me, and many others on a day-to-day basis. Thank you grandpa for your example and love. An old Wendy Bagwell song that grandpa liked is my prayer more today than ever before. It simply goes, "I firmly promise you that I meet you by the river, on the banks of that evergreen shore..."

On a much anticipated day, presidential hopeful John McCain announced his Vice President selection. In my humble opinion, it was a brilliant choice, a beautiful political move that I believe will help McCain move into the White House come January. Gov. Sarah Palin is a pro-life mother of five. Her husband is a member of the United Steel Union and a life long fisherman. Her son is soon to be deployed in the US Army fighting for freedom. She won a very competitive campaign in Alaska on Political Reform. I am still not a huge fan, a bandwagon rider, of John McCain, but todays announcement gives me a little more assurance that, we the Republican Party, will retain the White House.

Today is Justin's first day at school. Wow! How time has flown by. It was hard to see our little boy head off for this great adventure. The one we are used to hearing run around and play by the hour at home. But today it was much quieter. Kayla wasn't sure how to act. She said she didn't want Justin to go to school because she was going to miss her best friend. We all had that feeling as we drove the 24 miles to Penn View Christian Academy. None-the-less, he's there and starting his PVCA career. I found myself praying different times today for him, not only for strength and courage, but that God would even now help make the right choices and through his Christian education, help put a hunger in his heart to serve God.

Now that life is having a sense of normality again, I will attempt the blogging world again. Mt. of Blessings is, in my humble opinion, one of the best camps around. It is a family camp, low keyed, and full of activity. We have 2 evangelistic services a day, which found us listening to wonderful messages from Revs. Paul Pierpoint and Jacob Martin. The afternoon session is for youth which Rev. Aaron McCarty spoke. The singers were the Shrouts and the Glicks, with Sharon Joy Evans teaching the children. Sharon Joy averaged 76 kids a service. These were all kids who stay on the grounds. In one morning service, we had a little over 100 in attendance and 52 were young people. The Stahl's brought their pony up for a day and gave the kids rides. Another addition this year was that we had a professional fireworks display. They went on for at least 20 minutes, non-stop. They were beautiful. Thanks to those who made that possible. It was a tiring 10 days, but well worth every tear, sweat-drop and victory. Already looking forward to Mt. of Blessings '09.

Today was a second clean up day at Mt. of Blessings as we are making final preparations for camp which starts this Friday. The Tolleys and us spent the day up there. It was a great day together. On the way home we took them to Alvira. The Tolleys love history so they liked the trip. Alvira was a town at one time. During the world wars, the government bought out the home owners and turned it into an ammunition dump. There are still bunkers there, some of which you can go into. Scattered throughout it all is very old grave yards where soldiers from wars starting with the Revolutionary War are buried. Here are some pics to prove it. It was neat. The foundation was from the church that once stood in front of the cemetery.

God's Missionary Youth Camp

I know you may think I am biased, but God's Missionary Youth Camp is as good as it gets. President Jacob Martin Has a vision and a heart for young people and it is obvious every year. This year 126 young people converged onto the campus of Penn View Bible Institute for GMYC '08 (one shy of breaking our record). We had 10 teams 13 - 14 young people. It was a fight to the end. This year there were no blow outs. It was a tough fight for the top. Never in my "coaching" history has my team made it past eighth place. This year that all changed. Our team missed first place by a mere 55 points. We had a great time as a team. You can view pictures of GMYC at www.gmcyonline.wordpress.com . Thank God for His presence in many of the services and for the many young people who made spiritual progress.

9th Wedding Anniversary

This past week, Vonnie and I celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary. It is hard to believe that 9 years have come and gone already. It has flown by. At times it is hard to remember back thirteen years ago when I first came to the campus of Penn View Bible Institute. I was a junior in high school. Donnie, Vonnie's brother, was in the same class as I. About two days into my 6 year stay at PVBI, Donnie asked me a typical guy question..."So which girls are you scoping out?" There were two girls I said caught my eye. One was taken and would soon get married. So that narrowed it down to one girl, and my first choice anyways...Vonnie Hallenbeck. It wasn't long until we began chatting and joking together. Then there was Junior/Senior banquets. (The competition was stiff at times, but somehow I wound up on top). About two years into our four year "dating years" I saw true love face to face and it scared the daylights out of me. So I decided to take a sabbatical from dating. It didn't last long and we were soon dating again. Not long after, we were engaged and then on June 19, 1999, we became the Ellisons. I have enjoyed every minute of it. She annoys the stew out of me at times, but guess what, I annoy her too. We have our disagreements just like everyone else. But not one day has went by that I have second guessed my decision to marry Vonnie. She is truly the love of my life and the best mother to be found. It has been a joy to have her serve by my side for the past eight years in the ministry. She is a huge boost to Ellison ministry team. Having said all of this, Vonnie, I love you more today than ever before. You're the best! I am so glad God brought us together!

There are a lot of people who have greatly impacted my life. Many teachers and instructors. Preachers and friends. But one sticks out above the rest...my dad. Dad has been a rock steady example in most every area you can think of. My dad never wired a house, built a new addition on our house. He never changed a transmission or an exhaust system. But he did do what he knew. He knew ball. So many were the days he was a catcher and I the pitcher. He was the quarterback and I was the wide receiver. We hunted and fished many times. Bottom line, he was always there and he still is. Many are the times I call for advice or to run something by him and he listens and offers sound advice. Today, as often as we can we still enjoy a round of golf together. Time well spent shooting the bologna as we travel around the course in our cart. Times that still help shape and mold our friendship. Thanks dad for all you have done. Your sacrifices and friendship. Your the best and I love you.

Then there is my father-in-law, Don Hallenbeck. I am sure he wasn't quite sure want his daughter was getting into when we married (he was my dorm dean at PVBI). But none the less, he accepted me into his family as if I were one of his own sons. He also has taught me a lot and I am grateful to have married into such a wonderful family. Thanks Don for all you have done.

Steve Miller built a tree house for Justin and Kayla last week. We have one more level to build but we ran out of time and we need just a little bit more wood. At least when the floods come, we have a place to go. The first level is nearly 6 foot high and the second level in 10 - 11 feet high. They love it and I am sure many days will be spent under the shade of these limbs.

I must start off by saying that I am one proud dad. Justin, Kayla and Tyler are wonderful kids. (Tyler hasn't had much time to prove himself, but I feel it coming on). I thank God for giving Vonnie and I three healthy kids. I couldn't ask for a better family. A great wife, three lovable kids...what more could you ask for. At the New Columbia God's Missionary Church our tradition for Father's Day gifts are fresh. homemade pies. The men seem to enjoy this rather than the .99
cent hammer they could get. None the less, it is a neat time together and the pies are delicious. This year we had 45 pies made with only 3 or 4 left over. All in all....a good day!

Yesterday was a great day in many ways. First and foremost because of the freedom we have and it was nice to reflect on the price that was for that freedom. I think it helps to every now and then to remember the great price that was paid. It helps us not to be so careless about it and to be involved in things to help maintain that freedom. Another reason it was great was because I did basically nothing. I did go to PVBI and PVCA graduation and then attended a graduates party from our church. Other than that I rode my brother-in-laws new four-wheeler, caught a 6 foot black snake (which Kayla loved to pet) and trimmed my in-laws shrubs. It was a great day. Thank God for the relaxing day but more so thank God for our freedom.

What a great day it was. God smiled on our family one more time and gave us a healthy baby boy. Vonnie is glad he isn't kicking anymore and I am glad she only has a couple more weeks to play her "pregnant card". (for all you women sympathizers, relax, I am joking). While it was a good day, it did have some disappointments. My dad and mom, who had planned to be here all this week couldn't come. My mom broke her wrist and had Dr.'s appointments. My sister took the day off and for whatever reason had her picture taken with everyone else's camera but mine. Three's a charm and that's all there will be (unless the medical field fails us)!

Hobe Sound College Choir

Sunday, Hobe Sound College Choir was at our church and what a great job they did. Afterwards we went to the Allenwood Fire Hall for a carry-in dinner. We fed nearly 150 people. The church people did an excellent job in providing a delicious spread. It was a great time together. The food was great and so was the 50 plus deserts.

This past Monday and Tuesday we took a couple of days off. Revival is over and a very exciting time is just days away. We decided to take a couple of days and do something with the kids, so it was off to Harrisburg we went. We took the kids to Chuckie Cheese's to play. After that we stayed at the Country Inn & Suites on Jonestown Rd. Tuesday we found ourselves trying to finish getting things for the upcoming baby event. It was a great couple of days to spend together and
refreshing for my wife to not have to cook or do dishes for two whole days.

Yesterday was our first Friend's Day at New Columbia (at least since we have been pastoring here). What an exciting day it was. For the past few weeks we have been announcing and encouraging people to invite friends to come join us for our worship service. And guess what? They did. We had 42 visitors in our morning worship. It was exciting. We are trusting God to help us make every in-road we can so we can do our best to help show each one the love of Christ. I spoke from the text, "behold I stand at the door and knock". Reminding people that God knocks because He is interested in relationships. He knocks on the the door concerning our relationship with our Companions, the Church and with Christ. There were different ones who raised their hand for prayer, so if you think of it, pray that God would continue to be faithful and give us the opportunity to follow up and press the issue a little deeper. Last evening we had our Commission Service for Michael and Crystal Mason. They leave this week to serve in Mexico. They served our church in the music department for nearly four years. They were a great asset to our church. God is good and we are grateful for the wonderful day He gave us yesterday.

Book Report

I am not a big fan of bloggers who continually give book reports on their blogs, but I will do so for this post. I have read different books from the Leading Pastor Series that have been great. This book follows the tradition. I am only into the first few chapters but it deals with an area I feel the "church" needs to reconsider. I mentioned it in my most recent post, but again the question is, "why are we here as a church"? The book looks at the entire story of Joshua and examines his leadership time. He makes a statement that, like the Isrealites, the church of today has spent to much time wandering in the wilderness. Their focus is lost. They mark time by doing things they have always done, not pursuing any particular direction. Because of this, the church cannot see beyond their own needs. Because of this misdirection, statistics say that churches reach their peak well before they reach 2 decades old. God help me to regain the real focus of the church. I must admit as a pastor it is easy to fall into this mentality and be only a mediator among the saints and fail to be a mentor to the sinner.

God help me as a pastor and leader. Without someone to keep the vision real and fresh before the people, people will perish. "God, keep me real so my vision will stay fresh."

21st Bus & Outreach Convention

Last evening, we returned from Lebanon, Pa where this years Bus & Outreach Convention was held. To me, this is the most valuable convention ever. It is always chuck full of practical ways to enhance your ministry in every area. From Sunday School, bus routes, pastoral and leadership, they have it covered. Each evening an evangelistic service is held. This years main speakers were Revs. Chris Cravens, Mark Mowery and Rick Maloyed. In recent weeks God has been helping me see some things. We seem to have gotten into a mindset in our holiness churches that church is about ministering to the saints. Encouraging them, loving them and refilling them with enough strength to make it back next week. While this is all part of it, the main responsibility of the church is to minister and serve this world with the life changing message of salvation. We sometimes focus so much on the saints we forget our responsibility to the sinner. If all we do is minister to ourselves and do not reach out and bring others in we become an unhealthy church and a failing church. This Bus Convention helped me to see this more real than ever before. My prayer is that God will help me to apply what we heard to our ministry at our church in a greater way that we will be the balanced and strong church God wants us to be.

Once again we celebrate the day of love. I am a very fortunate man. I get to spend everyday of my life with the ones I love. First of all I feel extremely lucky to have my wife Vonnie as part of my life. I couldn't ask for a better wife. She is an awesome mother and an outstanding pastor's wife. I am fortunate to have someone who carries the burdens of our ministry. I think she does an outstanding job. Justin and Kayla are just bright spots in our lives. Their smiles and laughter may any dull day better. I thank God for our family and I want them and everyone else to know that I love them and that I am glad God brought us together.

Today was another long day. I spent the morning finishing up my message for tomorrow. Them Steve Miller came over and helped do some remodeling at the church. (Actually he did the remodeling and I helped him). We moved the secretary's office into the church library, therefore giving me a little more office space. I needed more room for books, etc. but this also gives me more privacy for meetings. With the secretary office being right outside my door, conversations could easily be heard outside, even with the door shut. Now...problem solved. I will post pics soon.

Tonight, Vonnie and I went out by ourselves. It was my first time at Red Lobster. I was impressed. Vonnie had grilled chicken (she is allergic to fish). I had their classic fried shrimp and the Italian Shrimp Scampi. It was delicious. We will be back. Thanks Sheri and Willard for watching the kids for a couple of hours. You are great!

As you can see we were not lacking in the food department (the desert table is not shown). It was a great time to be with a lot of friends and bring in the new year realizing we are blessed to have such great friends.

Some may remember a contest that Jim Plank, Jon Plank, Aaron McCarty and myself have going. A contest to see who is right concerning the 2008 elections. Every one, except me, said that Hilary Clinton would take the Democratic nomination. I, and only I, had, and still have, more faith in the American people than to election the "wicked witch of New York". Well, with the first caucuses over in Iowa, Clinton took third. Obama -37.36; Edwards - 29.97; Clinton - 29.45, according to drudgereport.com. Huckabee took first with a good 9 point lead over Romney and Thompson took third for the Republicans. So far; so good!

Well. it is finally here. After a very hectic year and going into a very hectic season, our family is going to get away for a few days. Lord willing, (something a pastor always says before vacation, because inevitably, if something is going to happen concerning church work it will happen the day of departure) we will be leaving after service tomorrow evening to head towards Hobe Sound, Florida. We are going to visit my wife aunt and uncle, Paul and Donna Peak. I probably will not blog until we return. Not that my posts have been regular recently. So long, farewell!

Newly Remodeled Kitchen

This past week during our revival, our evangelist Rev. Stephan Cassady and I had the bright idea to remodel the kitchen. So we started and I just finished moments ago. We took out some cabinets, put in some recessed lighting, and did some painting. The only other improvement we will do is put in new counter tops. The one on the bar will be wider so we can put in some bar stools. Here are the pics.

We just closed out our fall revival with Stephen & Nicole Cassady. It was a great time. God has been helping us at the New Columbia God's Missionary Church. There was a great spirit leading into the meeting and it seemed to have continued throughout the meeting. There were seekers in 4 of the services...to God be the Glory. The Cassadys were a real treat to have in our home. We had a great time. We thank God for His help and are anticipating His continued help in the future.

Tonight I tried something I've never done before. I cooked supper. Many of you know that Olive Garden is my favorite restaurant. The last time there I had a dish very similar to this. So tonight I set out to fix it. Believe it or not, it tasted a lot like it. Rest assured, Olive Garden has nothing to fear from Chef Matte', but I must say, mine wasn't to bad. My dream is to one day visit Italy, Venice especially.

Yesterday was Justin's fifth birthday. Man, how time flies. We have never had a "real" party for him, because he didn't quite underdatnd it all. So it has always been with just family. This year we invited the Randy & Gwen Tolley and their crew, Eric and Jill Susan and their kids and Steve and Sarah Miller, the Hallenbecks, Laura and Jon and Alica Plank. Not everyone could come but Justin had a great time. He was surprised. Yesterday, Justin asked Vonnie to help put on his socks. Vonnie said your 5 now and a big boy, you can do it. His response was, I'm not 5 yet. People haven't come to my house and I haven't eaten my cake yet. Happy Birthday Justin. We love you and wouldn't trade you for the world!

Troy, Missouri

As you have probablly already read on other blogs, Revs. James Plank, Aaron McCarty, Matt Ellison and Jon Plank went to Troy, Missouri for a local IHC. We had a blast. God's presence was with us in many of the services. While we went primarily to minister to and encourage the people there, we also had a great time together. When you leave the central Pennsylavania area, you realize how fotunate we are to have so many "sister" churches around us. I believe we were a blessing to them all. Jim preached extremely well. Aaron preached a superb message and sang as good as I've ever heard him sing. Jon ripped up the piano as usual and provided us all with wonderful humor. I had never said this to anyone but my wife, but ever since I graduated my dream has aleays been to some how be able to be in a ministry team with Jim, Jon, Aaron and myself. I was overwhelmed when Jim called and proposed the idea. A dream come true. I am amazed how God keeps His promises. He said He will give you the desires of your heart I you will serve Him. It was an experience I will always cherish. Needless to say, our trip began and ended with laughter. It was great. Here are some pics, some of which are probablly duplicates you have seen elsewhere. After two rides on my yardsale bike, I realized it wasn't sufficient. The tires would not hold air because they are cracked. Most importantly, it was a rather small bike. It's hard to imagine, but my knees practically touched the handlebars as I rode. So today I bought a new bike that will fit my riding needs. It was purchased at Dick's Sporting Goods and will play a great role in my thinning down process. Future updates will follow!

Today is the big day. I started riding my newly aquired bike. I am on a quest to fulfill my promise to my congregation that I made January 2007. That promise was that I would be 24 pounds lighter come January 2008. Being the procrastinator that I am, I'm in a bit of a bind. My birthday is coming up, so I asked for a bike. I had one picked out and was going to purchase it until I found this beauty at the Watsontown Yardsales for $10.00. Quite a bargin. I know it's not as nice as Lance Armstrong's, but it will do the trick. So for the record, this morning I weighed in at 215. By January, I must weigh 191.
